Grades K-5 & 6th-12th (2026-2027)
Whether you have never played chess and want to learn the basics or it you have played some and want to improve your skills, Waconia Chess Club is a fun, learning experience. Research shows that kids who play chess often see increases in scholastic performance, especially in math and reading. Best of all, kids love it! Students will learn: value of pieces, the difference between check, check mate, and stalemate; basic checkmate patterns, opening principles and general strategic concepts. There will be instruction given, but also open play time where kids can try out their own strategies - plus a tournament with trophies and medals. Chess sets will be provided; kids do not need to bring their own.

Pat LaVone is a chess teacher and advocate, has been teaching chess for 28 years, including 20 in Waconia, was voted SCA chess coach of the year and coached Eden Prairie High School and Breck School to the Minnesota State Championships.
